Bucolic bluejays, vagabonds! The searing heat of summer has set the woodland ablaze! Beware of monsters! They’re everywhere!
Join us at Gen Con
We’ll be at Gen Con starting on Thursday! If you’re attending, come say hi, play a game, and take in a panel at the 3rd floor of the Hyatt Regency! We have almost 700 events happening during the weekend, including a Root multi-table event, a GMing Root Q&A session, demos of our upcoming game Airlock, and a special announcement on Thursday at the Magpie Showcase!
Project Update
Some very exciting news! We’ve managed to get all of the accessories for the game, like dice, into sampling. This means we’re seeing samples and making changes to ensure that you get the best produce available that looks amazing. The biggest hurdle was ensuring the dice mold looked fabulous, but in happy news, that’s done! We should be able to start sharing some previews soon!
Otherwise, the book is very close to being done. We have one final chapter to finish fully developing and writing. Layout is already complete for this part of the book, so it’s just making sure the text fits in the space provided and tells you everything you need to know about ruins.
Once we have the ruins chapter complete, and have the book in a preview layout, we’ll be able to send out a preview file!
Monsters Preview

These monsters hail from across the Woodland—everything from predatory spiders to docile beetles, all ready to be added directly into your game. In addition to the harm tracks, monster traits, and monster moves, each monster listing also includes information on how to include the monster in your vagabonds’ story.

Chapter One Preview & Final Playbooks!

Felonious foxes, vagabonds! It’s the spring season and we’re excited to be popping up with some great updates for you! Let’s dive in!
Project Update
We have a few exciting updates to report! First, all the accessories are submitted for samples. Our partners will send us some very fancy samples and we will work with them to make those perfect. This process can take awhile, but it has begun and we’re super stoked!
The clearing books are almost done and so is the Ruins & Expedition book as well. Right now we're chugging through the layout to get it done. Once it’s in layout, and gone through a few rounds of edits and approvals, we’ll be able to send out a preview. That could still take several weeks or even a month or two, but we’re clawing ever closer to letting you see the books!
Chapter One Preview & Final Playbooks
We are very excited to bring you a preview of Chapter One Ruins & Expeditions! We’ve also released the final playbooks for you to add to your game!
- Chapter 1 formally adds the Hundreds and the Keepers in Iron to the Woodland, including a full description of each faction, rules for adding them to the simple faction roll from the Root core book, and the full rules for adding them to the faction phase as well.
- The final playbooks include all playtesting feedback, including notes and ideas sent in by backers. Thank you so much for all your feedback on these new playbooks!

Project Update
As you can see from these shiny preview chapters, things are moving! We’re working hard to wrap up final writing, move through editing, and get chapters into layout! We’re happy to report that we’ve finished two chapters for your enjoyment!
Chapters 2 & 3 and Monster Preview
We are very excited to bring you a preview of two chapters of Ruins & Expeditions—Chapter 2: New Moves & Skills and Chapter 3: New Equipment. There’s also a fearsome monster for you to check out—the Giant Trout!
- Chapter 2 adds a plethora of new weapon skills, Reputation moves, Drives, Natures, and more. Everything you find in this chapter can be added to your Root RPG campaign right now, including the new species moves and abilities for Badgers and Rats!
- Chapter 3 expands on the existing equipment rules with new tags (positive and negative) and a bunch of new premade gear, all of which you can use right away too!
- The Giant Trout preview is our first monster release, and it shows off both what this individual monster can do and what the broader monster template looks like for the other monsters!

Bellicose badgers, vagabonds! It’s time for another update on what’s going on with the project! Let’s dive in!
Project Update
Things are moving along nicely, vagabonds! In great news, almost all of the art is done, which is super exciting! Once it’s complete we’ll have it ready for layout in the new book! We’re also thrilled that we’ve sent all the accessory files to their production places and will be getting samples back soon. The only one outstanding is the sticker sheet and it should be done by the end of this week.
We’re also very close to finalizing the new playbooks. As such, we’ll be closing feedback on the new playbooks on April 11th! So if you have feedback, please get it in as soon as possible!
Clearing Booklet 2 Preview
We are very excited to bring you a preview of Clearing Booklet 2! This is a PDF preview for your perusal.
Clearing Booklet #2 brings all four of the previously released free clearings into one book, matching the layout and format of Clearing Booklet #1. In addition to some new art, this new version of these clearings puts all of the content in one place so you can introduce these clearings into any game you’re running with ease!

Project Update & Map Preview

Revolutionary raccoons, vagabonds! We’re back for another update and thrilled to return for a project update and a sneak peek at the maps!
Project Update
As we reported last month, we’re very close to finishing up the writing for the book. The last 10% is taking a bit longer than we planned just because of some staff illnesses. That said, folks are taking a bit of time to recover and once they’re back, we’ll wrap up that last bit of the book and get everything fully into development! We can’t wait to update you once the book goes fully into dev and copy editing! So exciting!
All the accessories are now in production. That means dice are being made, dice trays are being printed, and dice bags are being sewn! Once we have the final products to show you, we’ll post some preview photos for you!
Map Preview
We are very excited to let you know that a lot of art resources have been rolling in! Our map artist has submitted all the maps to us. These maps will be part of the map pack and will keep the clearing names blank so you can insert your own names as your vagabonds explore clearings and wander about the woodland!
